BOOK EXCERPT

From the Overall Summary:

Guns, Germs, and Steel provides a basis for understanding why history turned out the way it did. Specifically, why did Europe end up with more power and resources, with the distinct ability to subjugate other societies?

The answer is that environmental and geographical forces were the major factors, and not any innate biological superiority. Put simply: food production was the key.

Europe (and Eurasia generally) had access to more food sources, and a geography that supported the transfer of knowledge and technology. Specifically, Eurasia had plants and animals that were readily available for domestication, and a long east/west axis that promoted diffusion of food production technology. Other regions did not have such an abundance, and were subject to long north/south axes, which inhibited the ability to grow similar crops across large areas.

Food production allowed societies to expand their population base not only in sheer numbers, but in diversity of work product. Having an abundance of surplus food allowed for the development of non-food production tasks: specialized tool making, writing, metallurgy, ruling classes and professional armies.

In short food production was behind every other major technological leap. And once the agricultural revolution occurred, the balance of power continued to shift to Europe.
